Kimono Flea Market ICHIROYA's News Letter No.814
It is getting cooler and cooler in Japan. It will be the best season to wear kimono,
Not too hot, not too cold. Thinking about kimono coordinate is one of my favorite things to do. We will introduce kimono coordination like the last newsletter again in near future! We hope you enjoy our suggestion.
We are hosting Rugby World Cup, right?
We can watch the best rugby players play everyday. To be honest with you, rugby is not that popular in Japan. Baseball and soccer are a lot more popular. However, Osaka is a place where rugby is popular. Small kids play Tag rugby at elementary schools. Many Junior high and high schools have rugby club which is rare in Japan. Hosting rugby world cup must be precious experience for them, and encourage them to practice harder.
Ireland vs Scotland game made me stop doing anything else but watching TV. Now, I'm a rugby fan!
We are still hoping to win rest of games, and advance to the final league.
They are unique and fashionable!

In this newsletter, I would like to write about perfect Kimono to wear in Autumn.
We are supposed to wear Hitoe(unlined Kimono) in September, but soon in October, you can start to enjoy
Awase(lined Kimono). Oshima Tsumugi Kimono is a perfect Kimono to wear for rather chilly Autumn outings, don't you think?
You can choose your favorite Oshima depending on where you are headed. :)
It does not have to be Oshima Tsumugi, it can also be just a simple Tsumugi too!
I hope you enjoy Tsumugi style in this Autumn for casual outings!!
There are a lot more Tsumugi Kimono to choose from on our website.
If you need assistance choosing the right one for you, please feel free to let us know!
Just so you know, next coming up Monday is a Japanese national holiday, so the earliest we can reply would be on Tuesday.

Dear ICHIROYA News Letter readers,
Hi! How are you doing? Mitsue is writing this time. It’s getting cooler and cooler these days, but autumn is too short. So I’d like to enjoy this comfortable season as much as I can. What are you going to do in comfortable season?
One of my favorite outgoing is visiting museums. Vintage Juban(undergarment) is exhibited at a small historical museum of Yao city, Osaka where I live. I visited there and attended a lecture about pattern of Juban. It was fun as well as our staff meeting which we have every morning. Yes, we usually study about Kimono changing the themes every each month, so let me share you some what I learned.
The word ‘Juban’ is from Arabic ‘jubbah’, and the sound is from Portuguese. Originally Juban had no sleeves and the length was short, but it has changed with the times. The original ones are called Han-juban. They are hardly left, because underwear is consumables, you know. So ICHIROYA also has just a few ones, but we have many other vintage Juban with attractive pattern.
People enjoy hidden fashion from old times, and particularly put importance at a glimpse. So they enjoyed their favorite pattern with Juban in secret or make wishes for their family with it.
For example, women enjoyed glamorous, charming and graceful patterns such as flower, butterfly and 'genjiko' (ancient Japanese incense) .
The ones such as royal cart, treasure, nobles and castle is their longing for wealth, and scroll, book and musical instrument pattern is for educated.
Auspicious patterns such as 'Shou-chiku-bai'( pine tree, bamboo and Ume blossom), crane, 'Kikko' (tortoise shell) and 'Shippou-tsunagi' (interlocking circles) are symbols of health and wealth of the family.
'Asanoha'(hemp leaf) is growing up quickly and straightly, so the pattern is often used for baby’s and child’s one. Needless to say, toy and animal pattern such as doll, wooden horse and ball are often used.
For men, we can find historical pattern such as battle, Olympic and baseball for the lining which reminds of atmosphere of that time.
We can enjoy layered wearing with similar color or opposite one, combination of their own favorite. The way of enjoying Kimono fashion is unlimited. How about finding your favorite pattern and your special way of wearing Kimono at ICHIROYA?
Followings are the items which have those patterns I introduced today.

In Japan, September is the start of second semester at school. Kids went back to school
after a month long summer vacation. It is time for me to get back to regular bussiness
hours. I'm no longer stressed out to look after their homeworks and worried about their lunch.
YES!

Some of you may remember her article. Those who don't or haven't read, here is
her article for you to get basic idea of what the museum is about.

Their addmission fees are as following.
Elementary, Junior High and High School students YEN 540
University students YEN 2,160
Adults YEN 3,240
You will see the reason why once you visit there. The museum guide who I followed for
2 hours said "At this museum, you can get closer to those famous paintings which you are
prohibited to do so to the original." That is true.
painting is interesting. They show two "The Last Supper"s, facing each other in a huge room.
One is before restoration, the other is after restoration. We see a lot more clear objects and
colors in the after restoration one. If I want to see the original painting at Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan,
I need to make a reservation and wait for a year or so. I may do so in future. However, for now,
this museum is good enough for me!
Here is the promotinal video of the museum.

Those costumes were made by art school students in Kyoto. They did good job!
Every cosutume was well made, easy to put on. There was no way I didn't put them on!
You already know I'm a kind person who enjoy this type of event more than anyone else!
However, in this museum, everyone was having fun to do the same pose as the lady in the painting.
I was one of them.
Red Uchikake still attract many people all over the world.
Some of them actually wear them at their wedding.
Many of them display them at home and other places.
Delicate lace, sleek satin dress, gorgeous gown and white tights...
White tights???
How do I look like? Do I look like a dignified the Sun King?
I wish the wig was just a little bit more fluffy though...
Thank you for reading until the end.
Hope you enjoy our newsletter. See you next time!

The above photo was taken from my kitchen window last week.
Beautiful green rice stalks were making soothing sound against gentle morning breeze.
Can you hear the breeze through the photo? I hope you can.
However I did do Ohaka mairi to my ancestor's grave with my parents, but only for a short while... as I was afraid my parents could get a heat stroke!
I also went to a nearby mall with my daughter and had a Matcha white chocolate flavor shaved ice!! which was so good and cooled me down right away!!
In the top photo, Nonoka-chan is covered by Miyamairi kimono from Ichiroya.

Hello, ICHIROYA news letter readers, How are you doing? This time Mitsue is writing. The rainy season was over and we are suffering from the summer heat now. It is extremely hot and humid in August. The sound of cicadas singing makes us feel much hotter. Schools are in summer vacation now, so students enjoy planning some exciting events.Well, we have many festivals throughout the country in summer. The Gion Festival in Kyoto is one of Japan's THREE major festivals. It lasts for the entire month of July and various different events are held. For example, prayers to the shrine, assembling Yamahoko, dedicatory of traditional arts, Yamahoko parade and more. Yama (festival cars, float) Hoko (long-handled spears) parade is the most famous and have visitors the most. Yamahoko is decorated by each towns of Kyoto. They are decked with local arts and crafts, so that's why they are called walking museums. The festival was named from the Gion district of the city. The origin of Gion Festival is in 863 AD, the Imperial Court held a religious service to stamp out epidemic diseases and to let calm departed souls. Natural disasters also occurred such as earthquake and Mt. Fuji Eruption which cause damages to the land and epidemic diseases. So a religious service started letting the evil spirit transferred to 66 Hoko (number of prefecture at that time) to save the country. It became called Gion Festival and began to hold annually since 970 AD. With a history of more than one thousand years, the Gion Festival and Yamahoko are recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage.Kyoto's downtown area is full of people to see the massive parade during the festival. The streets are lined with food stands of such as Yakitori (barbecued chicken on skewers), Taiyaki (fish-shaped pancake filled with sweet beans), Takoyaki (dumpling with octopus), Kakigori (shaved ice with sweet syrup) and other popular food. Various kind of Chimaki (a rice dumpling wrapped in bamboo leaves) shaped charm are also sold. Women and men dressed in Yukata walk around the area, carrying with paper fans. A member of my orchestra living in Kyoto showed me some pictures of Gion Festival. You might see many pictures on internet, but the ones taken by ordinary women living in Kyoto will show you resident's view.ICHIROYA has some items with Gion Festival design.KurotomesodeTsukesageFukuro obiThank you for reading till the end. Next news letter will be sent on August 18. Till then, Good bye! Please have a wonderful weekend!
