Hello, this is Mari writing this week.
In Japan, September is the start of second semester at school. Kids went back to school
after a month long summer vacation. It is time for me to get back to regular bussiness
hours. I'm no longer stressed out to look after their homeworks and worried about their lunch.

In this summer, I visited a museum where I had been wanting to visit for long time.

The museum is famous for "the most expensive admission fee in Japan"!

At the same time, they are also known as "The museum of No1. customer satisfaction" in Japan.
You will see the reason why once you visit there. The museum guide who I followed for
2 hours said "At this museum, you can get closer to those famous paintings which you are
prohibited to do so to the original." That is true.

The photo is Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last Supper". The way this museum show this
painting is interesting. They show two "The Last Supper"s, facing each other in a huge room.
One is before restoration, the other is after restoration. We see a lot more clear objects and
colors in the after restoration one. If I want to see the original painting at Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan,
I need to make a reservation and wait for a year or so. I may do so in future. However, for now,
this museum is good enough for me!

There are costumes for you to try on here and there in the museum.
Those costumes were made by art school students in Kyoto. They did good job!
Every cosutume was well made, easy to put on. There was no way I didn't put them on!
You already know I'm a kind person who enjoy this type of event more than anyone else!

I know there was a controversy about this painting and dress like her in Boston sometimes ago.
However, in this museum, everyone was having fun to do the same pose as the lady in the painting.

This is Yoko from Ichiroya.
The above photo was taken from my kitchen window last week.
Beautiful green rice stalks were making soothing sound against gentle morning breeze.

*Also, the very top photo is sahved ice, `Kakigori', everyone's favorite thing for summer.
Our office was closed last week for the Obon, so it was my intention to write about my fun activities I enjoyed during the holiday in this newsletter, but... since it was extremely hot for most of the week, I hesitate to say,,,, I stayed home for the most part.... and did not do much...
However I did do Ohaka mairi to my ancestor's grave with my parents, but only for a short while... as I was afraid my parents could get a heat stroke!
I also went to a nearby mall with my daughter and had a Matcha white chocolate flavor shaved ice!! which was so good and cooled me down right away!!
We have many staff here at Ichiroya, and there are several departments within our company.
We have departments , such as Kimonotte printing, digitizing, photographing, shipping, writing descriptions, etc.
One of our staff here in our Kimonotte department had a baby girl in May and she is on a maternity leave.
We would like to share some charming photos of her daughter, Nonoka - chan, when they took her for the Miyamairi . Miyamairi is the first visit to shrine and it is just like `Christening'.
Yoshimi came to show her baby, Nonoka-chan in our office and everyone wanted to hold her! She came to our staff party too, so we all feel like Nonoka-chan is like our family.
Yoshimi and her husband said it is ok to share the photos.
In the top photo, Nonoka-chan is covered by Miyamairi kimono from Ichiroya.
Miyamairi kimono is not really `worn' but used by covering the baby.

My beagle Marin enjoyed being in air conditioned room with me and enjoyed my company, so that was a good thing!!

Hello, ICHIROYA news letter readers, How are you doing?This time Mitsue is writing. The rainy season was over and we are suffering from the summer heat now. It is extremely hot and humid in August. The sound of cicadas singing makes us feel much hotter. Schools are in summer vacation now, so students enjoy planning some exciting events.Well, we have many festivals throughout the country in summer. The Gion Festival in Kyoto is one of Japan's THREE major festivals. It lasts for the entire month of July and various different events are held. For example, prayers to the shrine, assembling Yamahoko, dedicatory of traditional arts, Yamahoko parade and more. Yama (festival cars, float) Hoko (long-handled spears) parade is the most famous and have visitors the most. Yamahoko is decorated by each towns of Kyoto. They are decked with local arts and crafts, so that's why they are called walking museums. The festival was named from the Gion district of the city.The origin of Gion Festival is in 863 AD, the Imperial Court held a religious service to stamp out epidemic diseases and to let calm departed souls. Natural disasters also occurred such as earthquake and Mt. Fuji Eruption which cause damages to the land and epidemic diseases. So a religious service started letting the evil spirit transferred to 66 Hoko (number of prefecture at that time) to save the country. It became called Gion Festival and began to hold annually since 970 AD. With a history of more than one thousand years, the Gion Festival and Yamahoko are recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage.Kyoto's downtown area is full of people to see the massive parade during the festival. The streets are lined with food stands of such as Yakitori (barbecued chicken on skewers), Taiyaki (fish-shaped pancake filled with sweet beans), Takoyaki (dumpling with octopus), Kakigori (shaved ice with sweet syrup) and other popular food. Various kind of Chimaki (a rice dumpling wrapped in bamboo leaves) shaped charm are also sold. Women and men dressed in Yukata walk around the area, carrying with paper fans. A member of my orchestra living in Kyoto showed me some pictures of Gion Festival. You might see many pictures on internet, but the ones taken by ordinary women living in Kyoto will show you resident's view.

I recently started learning to play the piano. Actually, I learned how to play the piano about 20 years ago, but gave up and didn't play since then because it was difficult. I have always wanted
to try again. Besides, I heard that it helps to prevent dementia!

Speaking of music, I also like traditional Japanese instruments. They were also
depicted beautifully in kimonos.

Have you heard of Gagaku? It is the court music of Japan from the Heian period (794- 1185). It is composed of percussion, wind and stringed instruments.
Let me introduce some instruments of them.
It's a 13-stringed Japanese harp. The strings are plucked with nail-shaped pickes, so it has rather clear tones. I learned playing it when I was a collage student, and liked the sound very much.
"Biwa"
"Biwa" is a four-stringed Japanese lute. It was used to tell narratives. I like it's lovely design. There are ancient Biwa of various beautiful designs gathered in Shosoin Treasure House in Todaiji teample. I recommend seeing them when you come to Nara!
"Tsuzumi"
Tsuzumi is a Japanese hand drum. It has loud and pleasant tones. It is often depicted colorfully in kimonos because it is regarded as auspicious motif.

Last weekend, we heard the good news.
"Mozu-Furuichi Kofungun", the ancient tumulus structures were designated for Cultural World Heritage Site in 2019.
This is the first cultural world heritage for Osaka, and Furuichi is the next city of Tondabayashi, in which Ichiroya is.

Hello, this is Mari writing this week. It is July! I can't believe that it is already halfway through 2019! In July, Ichiroya staff take annual medical check up. Some of you may remember my newsletter which I reported my check up last year. It will be my turn on Thursday, July 11. YES, it's coming! I haven't drunk, eaten deep flied food and sweets for about 3 weeks by now. Then, I go to gym almost everyday. I'm afraid to see bad result at the end of my check up. Wish my luck!
It is "Tanabata(the Star Festival)" today. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tanabata
There is such a romantic story behind the festival. We believe the myth which is the princess and her lover can see each other in the sky once a year, on July 7th, if it is clear weather in the night. According to weather forcast, there is a 50% chance of rain tonight. We are crossing our fingers for them!
For Tanabata festival, we decorate bamboo with Origami and "Tanzaku" strip of papers. We write down our wishes on the strip of papers. My sons used to write their wishes on the strip of papers and hang on bamboo. Their wishes were always same. "I want to be a power ranger when I grow up!" How cute! There are Tanabata festivals here and there in Japan. We often wear Yukata, summer casual cotton kimono, when we go to those summer festival.
Kids wear Yukata, too.
I know that Yoko also introduced Yukata last week. However, I just wanted to introduce some other Yukata for family! We have some mother and daughter yukata set! It must be super fashionable to wear the same pattern yukata with your daughters!

As you see from the above photo, yep, he is back!
A few days after water was drawn into next door Tanbo (rice field), the Kaeru has returned (literary kaeru(return) in Japanese) to our gate top. To be honest, after seeing him sitting there for years, it almost makes me happy to see him again, well.... except my daughter. hahaha

Well, July is starting tomorrow, and it will only get hotter next month to August which also means it will be a great season to enjoy Yukata and summer Kimono!!
This year's trend for summer Kimono in Japan is 'modern' and 'sophisticated' and so blue and white colors should become popular.
